This was my first exposure to so many blacks. We have a lot of
news about SA, but the news is only the second best way to learn
about a place and not a good way to learn about the people. I
find them very warm and sincere and would have enjoyed more time
here. There are a lot of things to see and the holiday season
is on now. Tourist things open good hours, but it is hard to
find where to buy boat things or get repairs done. We enjoyed
our time here and hope to return. Brad bought lots of stuff in
case we don't.
Sailmail is our primary method of communicating and has been
for many sailors for many years. While here we met Stan and
Sally Honey who generously started Sailmail and continue to
devote time to it. They came to the boat and we had a good
visit. Stan is also the Navigator on 'ABN Amro' the leading boat
at this leg of the Volvo Around the world race. Stan introduced
us to their weatherman, Ken Campbell of
www.commandersweather.com
who provided us with a valuable weather outlook. Thank you Stan
and your lovely wife Sally.
There is a weather window for us now so we can't wait. The
Agulhas current and the southern ocean make getting out and
around the corner difficult. After frantically getting things
repaired and in order we left at 05:15 Jan 1st, 06. Good to be
at sea again, but at 11:00 on Jan 2nd we discovered a broken
motor mount and were forced to turn back to Africa. We will go
to Mossel Bay for repairs and hope to arrive there after dark on
Jan 3rd. Didn't think we would get back this soon.
